“Beneath the Surface,” featuring the work of Provincetown artist Marc Kundmann, welcomes you into a world where colors evoke emotions and the boundaries between settings and narratives fade. Profoundly influenced by Cape Cod's rich artistic heritage, Kundmann has been creating work in his West End studio and throughout the Outer Cape for over 25 years.
Saturday, October 7th, 2023, “Beneath the Surface,” opens with a reception from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Bowersock Gallery, 373 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA. The work may be previewed online at bowersockgallery.com.
Prior to the opening, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, visitors will have an opportunity to see Kundmann paint in the Bowersock Courtyard. Steve Bowersock, Owner/Curator of Bowersock Gallery, “This is a rare opportunity for collectors to see an artist in action and we’re looking forward to the event.”
Kundmann often starts with just a blank birch panel and a palette of favored colors, to embark on a journey of discovery. “I start most of my paintings with little, or perhaps, a small kernel of an idea.” He may begin with random lines and colors, allowing the narrative to unfold, taking shape with each brushstroke. “It’s a reflection of the unpredictable nature of life, where unforeseen stories come to life for me that encourage the viewer’s personal interpretation.”
Of Kundmann’s work, art critic Deborah Forman wrote, “His bold colors are evocative, and the surface erupts in robust textures. You want to reach out and touch his paintings.” The inspiration for Kundmann's art emanates from the intrinsic qualities of the Outer Cape, where the natural and built environments seamlessly meld, and our diverse community fosters creativity. This exhibition pays homage to the beauty and wonders of this unique region and to the people called here.

Marc holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors from the University of Illinois, studied painting at the Provincetown International Art Institute with Jim Peters, and workshopped with Robert Henry, Bert Yarborough, Tom Knechtel, Richard Baker, and David Hilliard at Provincetown’s Fine Arts Work Center. Kundmann has been included in curated exhibitions at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum as well as being a teaching-artist faculty member.
