Bowersock Gallery

Exhibition - Clear Southern Waters

Mount Dora- Friday, February 17, 2012 from 6 to 8pm with an artist reception featuring Michael Palmer
This new body of work will take on the south's, southern charm.

Palmer’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Canada.

His paintings are part of several museums' permanent collections.

You can feel the “Clear Southern Waters” along the sun-baked docks, passing through the church window, or rustling trees along the porch. And like that soft wind, Michael Palmer’s acrylic and ink paintings catch the imagination and create a sense of place, purpose and ease.

“Soft Southern Breezes,” featuring the Key West artist’s work, opens with an artist’s reception, Friday February 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit runs through March  14th.

Palmer has absorbed and interpreted Florida for decades, notes Curator Steve Bowersock. “It’s clear he has a real feel for the region and a style that suits it, as well as the skill of an accomplished master to capture it,” says Bowersock. “Palmer is ‘an old soul’ of painting. His work is rich beyond the exceptional color palate. It shows a true understanding and appreciation for the subject.”

Palmer’s work is marked by his sense of color and form, but perhaps known best for his intriguing unusual perspectives, frequently “shot” from above or below a scene and a clear, individual hand.

This particular collection, more than most, evokes narrative. Even images free of people speak evoking the slap of gentle waves along  a dock, a fly buzzing in a still moment, or the preacher speaking The Word just outside one’s view.

Palmer has been a fulltime professional acclaimed painter for nearly five decades. His work is exhibited throughout the United States and abroad and appears in collections worldwide. He has received awards in numerous national competitions and his paintings are part of several museums' permanent collections, including the Seattle Art Museum.

“Palmer is a rare, full time, distinguished painter,” says Bowersock. “His paintings are collected worldwide with reason.”

This is the second featured artist exhibition at the Bowersock Gallery. The Mount Dora location is the second for Bowersock and partner Michael Sanger. The original location in Provincetown Mass., is celebrating its ninth year. Bowersock represents 30 New Hampshire and Maine artists, from the traditionally art-rich seacoast area, including Ogunquit Maine, where Palmer summers.
