Throughout his life he has been drawn to the inherent graphic quality of the woodcut. To depict movement from a stagnant material while balancing aspects of atmosphere and color is very challenging. The time consuming technique of reduction woodcut is multi-faceted; many levels of thoughtful planning and improvisation result in the finished image. He has concentrated on woodcuts over the past decade, and for the last two years he has studied closely with artist/master printmaker Don Gorvett in his Portsmouth, New Hampshire studio. His studio sits on the top floor of a restored 19th century carriage house within walking distance to the granite beaches, reefs, and point breaks where he has surfed for over three decades. Many of my pieces are direct observations of my experience in and around the ocean; they reflect this historic, yet ever changing, region." |
